GUITARIST-SINGER MATT ANDERSEN

SETS OFF ON YET ANOTHER CANADIAN TOUR AFTER
WINNING INTERNATIONAL BLUES AWARD

KITCHENER DATE AT THE BOAT HOUSE
SET FOR TUESDAY MARCH 9, 2010

New Brunswick's Matt Andersen is larger than life — and so is his talent and his showmanship.  Now based in
Halifax, Andersen’s a 400-lb. giant who’s building an international following for his high energy performances of a sprawling hybrid of blues, roots and rock and roll.

Now, having won the acoustic solo/duo award at the Blues Foundation’s annual International Blues Challenge in
Memphis in January, he’s setting off on yet another tour. This time he’s playing more than 25 theatre concerts in Ontario, British Columbia and Saskatchewan; additional dates may be added to the tour. Andersen will be sharing the stage with Wil, a highly praised Calgary guitarist, singer and songwriter. The Kitchener concert will be at The Boathouse.

When: Tuesday Mar 9 @
8.00 p.m.
What: A powerful show with two powerful guitarist/singers
Where: The Boathouse, 57 Jubilee Drive, Kitchener, ON
How much: $40  Tickets: (519) 497 8720

With his soulful voice and virtuoso guitar playing, Matt Andersen has sparked a remarkable career that’s built on a tour schedule of between 200 and 250 shows each year. Having opened concerts on tour with Randy Bachman, the late Bo Diddley, Delta blues icon David “Honeyboy” Edwards, Little Feat and many more, he’s now a headliner himself. Andersen has played throughout the
UK on four occasions, toured with CBC Radio’s Stuart McLean (and sold 5,000 CDs on the way) and is certainly one of Canada’s hardest working solo musicians.

In the past three years, Andersen has released an introductory EP along with two critically-acclaimed live releases and the full length release Second Time Around, followed by a studio album, Something in Between. His most recent release, Piggyback, is a series of duo performances with international harmonica star Mike Stevens. His total record sales in this country now exceed 30,000 units.

Brantford’s First Annual Songwriting Competition

Brantford has long held a history of talent, be it within the sport industry, or even within the telephone world.    We, at, "Out of the Blue Productions", recognize and appreciate the richness of the long list of musical talent both within Brantford, and surrounding area.

However, what can be frustrating for most musicians, is the lack of a proper venue in which to be heard.

What we hope to accomplish with the First Annual Songwriting Competition, is that:  Musicians and

Songwriters, along with people within the industry, will be united, brought to the forefront, and given a chance to share their talents.

It would be a great loss, to all involved, if this talent was not shared, due to a lack of venue.

FORUM

The Songwriting Competition, (performances), will be held at Goodfellas II, located at 125 Stanley Street, (on the corner of Stanley and Grey Street), in Brantford, ON, beginning the end of February, 2010.

Submission forms are available at:

JAMMIT MUSIC, located at 401 St. Pauls Ave., Brantford, ON

LA MUSIC, located at 139 Charing Cross, Brantford, ON

Goodfellas II, 125 Stanley St., Brantford, ON

All submission forms can be mailed or delivered in person

Not all songwriters care to perform live, so submissions in mechanical, (literary), form, are also being accepted, and will be given equal consideration, to those songs performed live.  There will be a third party signature, provided, as to assure copyright for each artist’s music.  Three songs, per category may be submitted.

Conor Gains News?

CONOR GAINS BAND PLAYS CAFE 13

CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO --- February 8th,  2010 --- Following three successful performances last month the ‘new’ Conor Gains Band returns to Cafe 13 on Saturday March 13th for a night of rockin’ blues.

The trio consisting of 16 year old guitar prodigy Conor Gains, drummer Vic Freitas, 37, and Jeremy Patey, 33, on bass, played the London Music Club on January 16th earning a standing ovation from the near capacity crowd.

Two weeks later it was a similar scene at The Boathouse in Kitchener where the band played three highly energised sets to warm applause. Finally on Sunday January 31st the band were guests at The Groove Kitchen and played a four song set for a recorded national radio pilot.

“I love playing at Cafe 13,” Gains says. “It’s where I first started playing in front of an audience at the weekly blues jams. And, I have always felt support from the crowd there.”

Gains was 12 when he first began playing at the Cafe 13 jams. These days the audience is much larger with most tickets sold well in advance.

The show begins at 9:00 p.m. and will consist of three sets ending roughly at midnight. Gains has been writing material of his own and recently collaborated on a song with Grammy award winner Dan Hill. He has included that piece in the show.

Since then his career has picked up. On May 11th of last year Gains was invited to play with the legendary Les Paul at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club. He has also played at clubs in Nashville, Memphis, Cleveland, Toronto and Montreal.

Tickets for the Cafe 13 show are now on sale for $10 each.

It's Time for Year Three!

The Grand River Blues Society is continuing its quest to educate young people about the blues with year three of the wildly successful

Grand River Blues Camp!

This will be a day-camp experience for young musicians from 12-18 years of age. Blues Campers will benefit from instruction by and performance experience with local, working blues musicians; a unique learning experience for young musicians; a mentoring opportunity (and additional revenue) for local blues musicians. This year’s Grand River Blues Camp will be held from August 2 to August 6 - the week leading up to the Kitchener Blues Festival.

Young musicians who play guitar, drums, bass, vocals, keyboards, horns or harmonica will find this a wonderful opportunity to learn about blues and meet other young musicians. During the week campers will learn about the history and influence of blues on modern music.  They will learn new licks, how to jam, how to set up and perform on stage, and form their own bands.

Registration for the camp this year is $200 per camper, which will include lunch each day.

As we did last year, the Camp will end with a culminating performance by campers on Friday afternoon, August 6, on the Matt Osborne Stage at the Kitchener Blues Festival.  The Grand River Blues Camp Showcase will be an amazing opportunity to participate in the Festival and to perform for friends and family.

Link to registration form and Blues Camp 2010 details coming soon.

Rachelle Van Zanten is an unlikely figure — a young woman who began playing bluegrass, but became an electric slide guitar virtuoso who tours Europe at least twice each year. She racked up 11 years (and four albums) with the award-winning rock band Painting Daisies, and now lives in rural BC.

Blessed with a charismatic stage presence that’s both infectious and charming, she’s been described by the Ottawa Citizen as “the total package, a great voice and a strong songwriter with excellent pop and rock sensibilities."

Twangville, a respected alt.country website in the U.S., wrote: “Van Zanten sure can play a mean guitar with confidence and brawn. It’s a mix of the rawness of a Lucinda Williams lyric with the slide guitar chops of Bonnie Raitt and a touch of Chrissie Hynde’s attitude.”

She’ll be joined at her first Hugh’s Room concert by Treasa Levasseur, the Toronto-based soul singer and keyboard player, who is set to record her next tracks in Memphis later in Spring. Her current CD, Low Fidelity, has been a favourite with CBC Radio and blues programmers at college and community stations across North America and Europe

Canada’s International Blues artist Shakura S’Aida

signs deal with German record label and releases new CD — Brown Sugar — in Canada and the US April 13.

The German record company Ruf Records has announced the signing of one of the hottest names on Canada's blues and jazz scenes, singer Shakura S'Aida.

The release of her label debut CD, Brown Sugar, is set for Tuesday April 13 in the U.S. and Canada. The CD will be formally launched in North America at a celebration/concert event at Revival in Toronto April 14.

Soon to become a favorite in the U.S., Shakura S’Aida (pronounced Shack-OO-ra Sigh-EE-da) has already built a strong reputation in Canada and Europe, thanks to frequent touring. She was the first runner-up at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2008 and has been a multiple nominee at Canada's Maple Blues Awards for the past four years.

Brown Sugar was produced and engineered by celebrated producer Jim Gaines (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Santana, Steve Miller in Tennessee. Of the album's dozen tracks, 10 are originals co-written by S'Aida and her guitarist Donna Grantis — a dramatic departure from her 2006 CD, Blueprint, on which she only wrote two of the tracks. The rest of the players on the recording are Lance Anderson on organ, Rick Steff on keyboards, Steve Potts on drums and Dave Smith on bass.

Brown Sugar showcases S'Aida's powerful, smoldering vocal style, which has made her an international favorite on the club and festival circuit. Her dynamic stage presence never fails to ignite the crowds that experience her power-packed delivery in-person.

Shakura S'Aida was born in Brooklyn, raised in Switzerland, and has been based in Toronto for many years. Also an accomplished actress and voice-over specialist, she's appeared in a number of stage productions, television series and films.

After her current tour, she's booked for two more tours in Europe, as well as the St. John Blues Festival in the U.S. Virgin Islands next month, plus other concerts and festivals in Canada and the U.S. Shakura S'Aida is booked by Steve Hecht of Piedmont Talent.

Ruf Records is distributed in the Canada and the U.S. by the Allegro Corporation, and Ruf is releasing the album world-wide. Already released in Europe, Brown Sugar is S'Aida's second CD, and she's completed the first of three extensive European tours to support the new album.

A sneak preview of the CD is available —  a key track, “Angels on High”,  is available as a download on the singer’s website — www.shakurasaida.com

with all proceeds donated to Haitian relief efforts.
